From May 2007 to March 2008 InWEnt and IOSN ASEAN+3 jointly organize several networking activities to develop a local FOSS ecosystem as well as training courses for FOSS trainers and advocates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Networking:
FOSS developers need to support and be supported by their local communities as well as to support each other. With several networking activities InWEnt and IOSN support a local FOSS ecosystem and encourage sharing of experiences, best practices and opportunities for collaboration.
Trainings:
With the training courses, InWEnt and IOSN aim to open up the market for multiple providers of FOSS solutions. With using open content training materials and low-cost examinations, trainings can be offered at an affordable rate. The trained proctors can even provide examinations independent of how individuals seeking to get certified have acquired their training, e.g. by self-study.
The objective of the training courses is to
- increase the number of FOSS developers and their skill base
- improve regional collaboration on innovative software solutions
- demonstrate the benefits of FOSS development models in data exchange and interoprability in times of crisis
A major barrier against adoption and deployment of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in developing of countries in the Asia Pacific region is the lack of human resources with FOSS skills. The introductory courses offered by InWEnt/IOSN enable and encourage IT trainers to train other trainers in their countries at an affordable rate - and therefore aim to kick-start self-sustaining development of FOSS human resources.
